In a day when the distinction between fiction and nonfiction has been blurred we find that fiction is often based on real life events and characters, and nonfiction writers have given a voice and thoughts to historical figures. However, there are books that are definitely nonfiction. They make us more informed about the world, they tell a story of history, they make us look at ourselves and others in a different light, and they present ideas that we would have never thought.
Our non-fiction book group proposes to find books that would elicit conversation. The books could be scholarly or popular, but they should have ideas that need to be discussed, and while varying viewpoints are the backbone of a book group, political and religious topics that are too divisive will be avoided. There will also be an attempt to choose a variety of subjects, and books will be agreed upon by a consensus of the members.
This group meets on the 1st Wednesday, 7 PM. It is co-ed and people need not think they must come as couples. Meetings will rotate among members’ homes with everyone bringing a small appetizer and their own beverage. No one is expected to be a facilitator.
Examples of books that we have read are: Being Mortal; Guns, Germs, and Steel; Quiet: of The Power Introverts…; The Lost City of Z; Escape from Camp 14; and No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II.
