QUICK CALENDAR

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

When you live in Colorado, you can’t always tell by looking out your window, but spring  IS here and summer’s not far behind.  This is the time of year when Evergreen Newcomers Club approaches the end of a year and anticipates the beginning of another.

Soon, your current Board will be replaced by a new one, making this my last opportunity to tell you how much I have appreciated the work that so many have done.

In presiding over this year’s Board, I had the great pleasure of working with a wonderful group of people who have given to Newcomers so much of  their time, talents, energy and enthusiasm.  I can’t thank them enough for all that they have done, but I hope they have some idea of how much I have appreciated all of their work.

The Board, however, is not the heart of Newcomers.  You are.  The leaders of all the activities and the members who participate in these groups are what the Club is all about, our reason for being.  Thank you so very much for your participation and for all of the planning, hosting and preparing you have done this year.

As you have the opportunity, I hope you will add your thanks, telling those people who have made your year a better one how much you appreciate their contributions.

When the new Board takes over this summer, its members will bring new ideas and fresh perspectives.  With their efforts and yours, we can all look forward to another great year ahead!

Gwen Haile

President

WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS SUMMER

Many of our activity groups take the summer off, but some of them become more active!  For example, the Serendipity Group chaired by Darla Schwartz.

Serendipity- In the winter the Serendipity group plays Texas Hold'em Poker, has a monthly Potluck Dinner, and has a Spicy Food Group that visits Denver and local restaurants to sample spicy food.  But in the summer, they really get geared up! They have taken a raft trip down the river, field trips to Boulder and other exciting towns, and are always coming up with creative things to do.  The winter activities will continue as well.  If you are looking for a little bit of "serendipity".......good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries......contact Darla Schwartz at 303-670-5552.

Evening Bridge - The relatively new group, Evening Bridge,  will continue to meet at 7 p.m. on the 3rd Friday of each month throughout the summer.  The group is limited to 8 people, so the first 8 people to sign up can play.  Contact chairman Kathleen Traynor at 303-674-8046 to sign up and receive details on location.

Photography - Meets on the 1st Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.  All are welcome.  Contact George Nelson at 303-679-8763 for location.

In addition, these activity groups will continue to meet.  Please contact activity leaders for details:

Bowling-Bill Schenk 303-674-6367
Local Hiking-- Alix Ferranti  303-674-8513
Scrapbooking- Pam Solomon 303-670-0426

For information on wine groups and book groups, please contact each chairperson directly.  Contact information is available on the Newcomers website at www.newcomers.com.

Tuscany Tavern A Taste of Italy

Please join the Evergreen Newcomers for lunch on May 10th, 12:00 noon at Tuscany Tavern.

Not an ordinary Italian restaurant chain, the Tuscany Tavern is family owned and operated.  The daily specials, authentic Italian cuisine,  the extensive wine list and the friendly family atmosphere will charm even the most discriminating diner. Please RSVP to Sheila Southey at s_southey@hotmail.com or call 303-670-7376.

SPOTLIGHT ON ACTIVITY LEADER: Colette Lambert (4x4)

"Two roads diverged in a wood and I...I took the one less traveled by...and that has made all the difference."  (Robert Frost)  If you've been itchin' to explore some off-road mountain terrain, perhaps you should join Colette Lambert and the the members of the Newcomers 4x4 Group this season!

The Newcomers 4x4 Group gets together in the warmer months (typically April through October or November) on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month to tackle local mining/logging trails with varying degrees of difficulty. Colette says it is very enjoyable to explore locations that would otherwise be inaccessible. They each bring a picnic lunch and stop to eat in a scenic spot with great vistas and Colorado wildflowers/wildlife. The 4x4 Group does four overnight trips each season (locations include Grand Junction, Buena Vista, Alamosa and Moab). Colette has co-led the 4x4 Group for 5 or 6 years, and also leads the "Winos" Winetasting Group. She has also participated in the International Group, the Bowling Group and Home on the Range. Colette has volunteered as a French tutor at Marshdale Elementary’s After School Program.

Colette, who was born in Belgium, moved to Los Angeles in 1978 and then left the craziness of the California riots to move here to peaceful Evergreen in 1993 with her husband and their two Chesapeake Bay retrievers. She is a Harley Davidson fan and organizes motorcycle tours for European groups who come to the United States to ride. Unfortunately, Colette's husband died of pancreatic cancer in 2000, but she made it through that difficult time with the love and support of her friends from Newcomers (especially her Winetasting Group). She has since met and married a great Texan named Bill.

As the only woman driver in the 4x4 Group, Colette pushes herself to try new challenges. The group is very supportive of each other. They keep in communication using CBs and "spot" for each other on the trickier parts of the trails. If anyone comes to a spot where they are not comfortable going through a particularly challenging section, there are often "bypasses" available.

If you are interested in checking out the 4x4 scene, all you need is a true 4-wheel drive vehicle which has the 4-low gear (not an all-wheel drive). Anyone who would like more information can contact Colette at 303-670-6835 or cowill@wispertel.net.

The Rodeo Parade will provide an unparalleled opportunity to publicize the Evergreen Newcomers Club and attract new members.

Join us in our effort to share with all Evergreen residents, both recent and established, the exceptional benefits and rich friendships gained by  participating in Evergreen Newcomers Club activities.
Newcomers is planning to participate in the famous Evergreen Rodeo Parade.

But we need your help!

►Members to pass out fliers at the parade
►Other....if you have creative ideas let us know

If you are willing to participate, please contact Anna Marie Nelson at 303-679-8763 or anskico@yahoo.com.

We can only do this with your help, so volunteer today!

KICKOFF KOFFEE

What could be a better way to kick off the 2008-2009 Evergreen Newcomers’ Club year  than with good food, live music, the opportunity to win great “stuff,” and a gathering of old and new friends??

Race to your calendars and write in Saturday, Aug. 16, Hiwan Homestead Museum Grove, as the first event of the season….the annual, but now EXPANDED, Newcomers’ Kick-off Koffee!  From 10 a.m. to 12 noon you can sign up for membership and activities while enjoying….

  • Evergreen’s talented folk singer, songwriter and guitarist John Erlandson
  • Yummy food and beverages
  • Drawings for community donated items (we’re hoping  many of you can donate fun door prizes for this)
  • A chance to preview and sign up for the numerous activities available to members
  • And, of course, both new and familiar faces!

Volunteers are needed to make this a truly festive event, especially since this is the most well-attended gathering of our membership and is a fun way to kick off a spectacular new year.  Donations of door prizes are needed (consider a great bottle of wine, a book relating to our region, a craft, a gift certificate to a local eatery….).  The planning committee also needs volunteers to help with publicity, hosting and hospitality.  Please call Audrey Boyan at 303-674-4872 if you can help.

Remember….10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, Aug. 16, at Hiwan Homestead Grove on Meadow Drive in Evergreen.  See you then!
