COFFEE AND DESSERT NIGHT FOR NEW MEMBERS

The Hospitality Committee will host a coffee for all new members of Evergreen Newcomers on Tuesday, April 8th from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  This will be a fun, social evening in someone's home.  We invite you to come and meet other new members, along with some current ones.  We'll be enjoying coffee and cake plus great conversation.  If you joined Newcomers but haven't signed up for any of our activities, you'll find out what others are doing.  Towards the end of March, we'll e-mail and/or phone all new members who have not yet attended a new member coffee.  Put it on your calendar and we hope you'll be able to attend!

SPOTLIGHT ON ACTIVITY LEADER: Karen Schenk (Bunco)

Do you "Bunco"? Ever heard of it? According to Merriam-Webster, it means "a swindling game or scheme", but the Evergreen Newcomers version is much less devious and a LOT of fun!

Bunco is a game played with 3 dice and anywhere from 12-16 fun-loving players. The objective of the game is to roll a specific number (especially three of the same number--what is called a "Bunco"). At Newcomers Bunco, each participant puts $5 in the kitty at the beginning of the evening. At the end of two rounds, the winner ends up with half of that money (and some of the others get a lesser take or the monthly door prize).

The Bunco group meets on the 4th Wednesday evening of each month unless there is a holiday or school vacation, and then the date is adjusted. The players rotate hosting in their homes. Each participant brings food and wine to share and a good time is had by all. You do not need to know how to play to participate--people catch on quickly, according to Karen Schenk, the Activity Leader.

Karen has lived in Evergreen for the past 5 1/2 years, has been in Newcomers for five years and has led this great group for the past four years. She says that being in Newcomers and leading an Activity Group has really helped her make an easier transition from a lifetime in Northern California to a new beginning in Colorado. She does miss being a beach bum, but says she just loves Evergreen. Also helpful is the fact that her sister lives just up the road in Idaho Springs.

When in California, Karen was a graphic designer/marketing coordinator who worked at trade shows, but she has been a stay-at-home mom for the past 13 years.  She has three daughters, the eldest of whom is getting married this October. Her middle daughter will be getting her driver's license soon and the youngest will start high school next year. They keep Karen quite busy, but she loves it.

In addition to the Bunco group, Karen also participates in the Newcomers Bowling and Poker (Serendipty) groups. As you can see, she loves games of all kind! If you would like to find out more about the Bunco group, feel free to contact Karen at 303-674-6367 or karenschenk@gmail.com.

KICKOFF KOFFEE

What could be a better way to kick off the 2008-2009 Evergreen Newcomers’ Club year  than with good food, live music, the opportunity to win great “stuff,” and a gathering of old and new friends??

Race to your calendars and write in Saturday, Aug. 16, Hiwan Homestead Museum Grove, as the first event of the season….the annual, but now EXPANDED, Newcomers’ Kick-off Koffee!  From 10 a.m. to 12 noon you can sign up for membership and activities while enjoying….

  • Evergreen’s talented folk singer, songwriter and guitarist John Erlandson
  • Yummy food and beverages
  • Drawings for community donated items (we’re hoping  many of you can donate fun door prizes for this)
  • A chance to preview the numerous activities available to members
  • And, of course, both new and familiar faces!

Volunteers are needed to make this a truly festive event, especially since this is the most well-attended gathering of our membership and is a fun way to kick off a spectacular new year.  Donations of door prizes are needed (consider a great bottle of wine, a book relating to our region, a craft, a gift certificate to a local eatery….).  The planning committee also needs volunteers to help with publicity, hosting and hospitality.  Please call Audrey Boyan at 303-674-4872 if you can help.

Remember….10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, Aug. 16, at Hiwan Homestead Grove on Meadow Drive in Evergreen.  See you then!
