CHANGES

We all know that life is full of changes -- grocery stores remodel, daring us to find the risotto in its new location.  Job opportunities come along, requiring a move to an unknown community.   Now we’re in a presidential election year, so change can be expected in our nation.  We expect changes, and we adjust fairly readily to most of them.   Now and then, however, a change occurs that startles us.

Long ago my husband’s grandmother, who was in her 80s at the time, talked about how so many young people in her community were dying, people in their 70s.   I was in my 30s and discounted her remark as an unrealistic attitude of the elderly.   Now, of course, I realize she was right; my perspective has changed.  That change, however, had never really affected my view of myself until recently.

In preparation for our granddaughter’s first birthday, our daughter-in-law asked that the  grandparents write our granddaughter a letter which will be saved until Audrey turns 18.  After writing mine, I suddenly realized it was possible I wouldn’t even be around when that 18th birthday arrives.  But how could that be?  I’m only sixty-one.  That’s not old!   And my mother is still living, so I am still somebody’s child!   Yet, I am also a grandmother three times over, which means it has been a LONG time since I was among the youthful.  I knew that last part was true; but suddenly I felt that truth, and that change in my perception was startling.

Then over the weekend I met a couple in their 80s who are still bubbling with activity and enthusiasm.  They provided a new perspective on this age business:  Maybe age really is just a number.  Maybe what we are doing with our lives is the truer gauge of where we are in life.   If we see to it that our days are full and rewarding, we’re still in as good a place in life as is possible, no matter what our age.    And whatever else, I still have the magical gift of grandchildren, something youth couldn’t offer!

And if we need a constant in our lives, we know we can count on broccoli always being good for us, as long as it’s organic, of course!

COFFEE AND DESSERT NIGHT FOR NEW MEMBERS

The Hospitality Committee will host a coffee for all new members of Evergreen Newcomers on Tuesday, April 8th  from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  This will be a fun, social evening in someone's home.  We invite you to come and meet other new members, along with some current ones.  We'll be enjoying coffee and cake plus great conversation.  If you joined Newcomers but haven't signed up for any of our activities, you'll find out what others are doing.  Towards the end of March, we'll e-mail and/or phone all new members who have not yet attended a new member coffee.  Put it on your calendar and we hope you'll be able to attend!

SPOTLIGHT ON ACTIVITY LEADER:  Pam Solomon (Scrapbooking)

When life gives you memories....make a scrapbook! If you need help getting inspired with your scrapbook projects, maybe it's time to join Pam Solomon and the Evergreen Newcomers Scrapbooking Group!

The group meets the 2nd Saturday of each month from 2:30-5 p.m. at the back table in the Camp Grounds coffee shop in Bergen (behind McDonald's). Each participant brings all of the materials they will need. The purpose of getting together is to inspire and motivate each other to make progress on various unfinished projects.

A few years ago, the Scrapbooking Group went on a retreat in Silverthorne where, when they weren't working on their scrapbooks, they were out snowshoeing together in Colorado's splendor.

Currently the Scrapbooking Group is collecting scrapbook materials/supplies to donate (via EChO) to the Ronald McDonald House so that families going through tough times can enjoy the diversion of making a scrapbook full of memories together. What a good cause!

Pam Solomon, co-leader of the Newcomers Scrapbooking Group, grew up on the East Coast (Georgia, Florida and Pennsylvania as a young child and Northern Virginia as a young adult). She has lived in the South Evergreen area for eight years with her husband and their two Bernese Mountain Dogs, which she shows in conformation and obedience. Pam is also involved in local pilates/yoga classes.

Pam has been a member of Evergreen Newcomers for five years and has helped lead the Scrapbooking Group for the past two years. She says that leading the group is not much work (just a matter of sending out email reminders) and is a lot of fun. In addition to the Newcomers Scrapbooking Group, she also participates in the Casual Gourmet Group.

If you would like to join the Evergreen Newcomers Scrapbooking Group and make some real progress on your scrapbook projects, contact Pam at 303-670-0426 or avalonpam@yahoo.com.
