START THE NEW YEAR WITH SOME NEW ACTIVITIES GROUPS!

Several new activities groups are forming for the New Year!  If you would like to join them, please let the chairperson know.

Photography.    The photography group will meet once a month to discuss photo techniques, make field trips, and learn new approaches to photography.  George Nelson will chair this group.  Beginner and advanced photographers are welcome.  To date, five members are signed up for this group.  If you would like to join, please email or call George and give him two days and times that are preferable for you.  He will review the dates and times and choose one that works best for everyone.  George can be reached at gnskico@gmail.com or 303-679-8763.  First meeting will be in February, so hurry and sign up now!

Evening Bridge.  New member Kathleen Traynor has expressed interest in an evening bridge group, and has volunteered to chair it.  So, c'mon daytime bridge players and those who cannot play during the day!  Join Kathleen for some fun evenings of bridge!  If you are interested, please call Kathleen at: 303-670-0867.

Moms and Tots.  The Moms and Tots group is looking for a new chairperson or several moms who could co-chair.  If you are interested in chairing, please call or email Anna Marie Nelson at anskico@yahoo.com, or 303-679-763.

GET TO KNOW…

NEW MEMBER PEG SOLOMON

Peg Solomon, who has lived in Evergreen just over a month, is already gearing up to be an active participant in the community.   While getting settled in her new home, she has signed up for several Newcomers activities, wants to get involved with Evergreen Players, is going to participate in the library’s Great Decisions program and hopes to work with rescued horses.

Peg comes from Chicago where, for 25 years in her first career, she was a speech pathologist and worked in Special Education in the public schools.   Over time, she became especially interested in parent advocacy until she realized that, to become more effective, she would need a law degree.  So off to law school she went, graduating when she was 49 years old!

During her training as a lawyer, she became fascinated with criminal defense work, particularly the strategic thinking it required.  She decided this was her new work.  When asked how she handled defending people she thought or knew were guilty, she said that her opinion was “irrelevant.”  Instead, she saw her job as making certain that the prosecutors did their jobs thoroughly and correctly, ensuring a fair trial for the accused.

Determined to do well, she even took an acting class because she felt it might enhance her courtroom performance.   In the process, she found she actually enjoyed acting, and she and a couple of her friends were even in a minor movie once.

She loves whitewater rafting, horseback riding, bridge, reading and traveling.  Her favorite trip was to Antarctica last year where her group of 47 traveled on a small, Russian icebreaker.  No frills on the ship, but the immensity and beauty of the area were beyond description, she says.

Another new member you’ll enjoy getting to know!

SPOTLIGHT ON ACTIVITY LEADER: Sonny Harris (Home on the Range)

"Home, home on the range....where the deer and the antelope".....nope! Not that kind of range! This Evergreen Newcomers group is a cooking class taught by Sheri McFarlane (who graduated from the Johnson & Wales College of Culinary Arts) and her helper, Sonny Harris. The class meets at Sheri's home in Hiwan Hills on the 4th Monday of each month and can accommodate up to 8 people (men and women). In addition to making (and eating) an appetizer, main dish and dessert each class, the participants are also taught basic cooking techniques and proper use of cooking/baking equipment.

Sonny was born in Chicago, but has also lived in New York, Florida and Vermont before moving to Evergreen about 10 years ago. She has led a very interesting life: Sonny has run an organic farm, owned an herb business, taught woodworking, did vocational counseling and is a trained Gestalt therapist. In addition, she is a talented artist (pottery, weaving, print making, basketry and welded sculpture). She volunteers at the Arts Center in Evergreen and is on their Advisory Council. Sonny is also active in the Colorado Symphony Guild (Foothills Unit).

In addition to the Home on the Range group, Sonny is also involved with other Newcomers Groups, including Serendipity, Book Club, Potluck and Winetasting. She has been a member of Evergreen Newcomers for 9 years and has helped lead the Home on the Range group for 3 years. She says it is not a lot of work but is definitely a lot of fun. If you are interested in being included in these cooking classes, contact Sonny at 303-670-3592 or sonnycolo@aol.com.
