HAPPY HOLIDAYS

CALENDAR

“FOCUS ON GIVING” / COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The ice is just beginning to form on Evergreen Lake, and suddenly we all realize how soon "the holidays" will be here!  We would like to feature a few of the local opportunities, easily available, for seasonal sharing.

· Consider buying an extra of each non-perishable meal item, keep separate in cart, bag separately and donate bag as you exit the grocery store.

· Food Drive sponsored by Senior Resource Center for seniors and disabled adults; also Channel 9 "Colorado Shares":

Each Safeway, Albertsons and King Soopers store has two "drop-boxes" for donations near the exit.  Send monetary donations to the Senior Resource Center, 5120 Hwy 73, Evergreen, CO 80439.

·1st Bank / main branch on Hwy 74:

A week after Thanksgiving, the "Angel" Christmas tree will be set up.  Select a child's name from the tree and purchase a gift that a disadvantaged child would love!  New, unwrapped gifts must be returned to 1st Bank to be delivered to the children.

· Donate online at www.seasontoshare.com sponsored by Post/News.  Help Newcomers make a difference in our community by donating needed items to our local charitable organization.

GET TO KNOW………

NEW MEMBERS JIM and LOUISE MITCHELL

Ready to start life anew after the empty nest syndrome hit them, Louise and Jim Mitchell began looking westward for mountain living after spending most of their adult lives in the D.C. area.  Louise, whose training was in architecture and architectural history, worked for some years in historical preservation but then became interested in what architecture is doing today.  Today she is a marketing manager for a large architectural company that has projects, such as TRex and FasTracks, throughout the country.  Jim is retired after doing printing and publishing for companies, particularly marketing for large grocery store chains.

Both have interests and ideas they hope to have more time to pursue now.  Louise is currently working on three book manuscripts having to do with spirituality.  She also conducts Shield Workshops, which are based on a Native American program called Vision Quest and involve meditation.  She hopes to offer more of them.   Jim is finally finding time to pursue his artistic talents.  A painter who moved from oils to watercolors, he particularly enjoys painting landscapes.  In addition, he wants to continue a version of the work he did with Boy Scouts when their son was growing up -- mentoring young men into adulthood, including helping them decide what it means today to be a man in contrast to the expectations of the past.

Both are photographers, are interested in preserving the environment and enjoy exploring new areas.  For the immediate future, Louise is interested in exploring close to home, while Jim is ready to head to Europe.   More options for their multi-faceted plan for this new phase of life!

SPOTLIGHT ON ACTIVITY LEADER: MYRNA GOLDBERG (LOCAL HIKING)

If you enjoy hiking with fun people on a variety of trails in the Evergreen area, you should definitely consider joining the Local Hiking Group. This group meets every Wednesday at 8:30 A.M. at a designated spot in town (that you will be notified of via email if you join the group). Occasionally the hike location may be as far away as Georgetown, though they are mainly local trails.

Myrna moved to the Evergreen area five years ago and has been Co-Leader of the Local Hiking Group for the past two years. She is originally from New Hampshire, where she taught business education for about 15 years. Myrna enjoys traveling and just recently returned from an exciting trip abroad that included Prague, Budapest and Vienna. Myrna has one daughter who lives close by in Arvada.

In addition to the Local Hiking Group, Myrna also participates in other Newcomers Groups, including the Friday Hiking Group, Serendipity and the (formerly-Newcomers) Singles Winetasting Group.

If you are interested in joining Myrna and other fellow hikers for some good exercise and great company, give her a call at 303-670-1219 or email her at bmgoldberg@comcast.net. This hiking group is open to all adult age groups and abilities. You need not be an athlete to join in the fun!

  Next Club Board Meeting

The next Club Board Meeting will be on Monday, December 3 at 9:30 a.m. at the Bergen Park Fire  Station.  All current members are invited to attend.
