MONTHLY LUNCH

*****************************************

Come and join us for our monthly lunch!  Starting in November, Evergreen Newcomers is putting together a fun place to meet and try different cuisines each month.

Our first gathering will be at The Bistro on Saturday, November 17th at 11:00.  The Bistro is located in The historic Marshdale Lodge which was built in the 1920s and recently renovated.  Brunch will be served to those who dare to discover Evergreen’s newest European cuisine.  A sampling of the brunch menu includes almond crusted French toast, multigrain pancakes, smoked salmon benedict, roasted fennel omelette, mango mimosas….and need I go on!

We really hope you will join us, so please RSVP to Sheila Southey at s_southey@hotmail.com for a head count by November 16th.  The address is 27376 Spruce Lane, Evergreen and is located on Highway 73 across from Marshdale’s Red Barn.  This is not an event that requires pre-payment.  Each check and gratuity will be paid by the individual participants.  See you there!

INTRODUCING NEW MEMBER SANDY SCHEPIS

Sandy Schepis is a wildlife and nature photographer who was recently appointed as the affiliate photographer for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI), the foremost conservation organization involved in protecting the critically endangered mountain gorillas of the Virungas volcanoes rainforest in Africa. She and her three cats moved from Atlanta to Evergreen in August, ready for a change of venue as she continues her work and pursues her love of the outdoors.

While she once worked in the corporate world of radio, she always loved taking pictures. Following her first trip to Africa several years ago, she received encouragement from friends and family to make her hobby and passion her lifework.  After a 2005 last-minute trip to Rwanda to see the mountain gorillas, which was escorted by the President and CEO of DFGFI, she was given the opportunity to do some work for the fund, evolving into her recent appointment.

When Sandy talks about the beauty and the precarious plight of these “Gorillas in the Mist” which so captivated Dian Fossey years ago, it is clear they have also deeply affected her. So on her many trips to Africa, she photographs these beautiful animals for the Fossey Fund; those photographs are on both the Fund’s website. www.gorillafund.org and on her own site, www.wildlifeshowcase.com.   In the not-too-distant future, she hopes to begin leading or co-leading small groups of tourists who want to see these gorillas.

Sandy is also an avid outdoorswoman who, among other things, has done advanced scuba diving throughout the Caribbean and the South Pacific and also off the Galapagos Islands.  At the Galapagos, she was somewhat surprised at the strength of the currents, but had no fear of the whale sharks or the hammerheads swimming around her.  And she describes herself as a “homebody”!

She hopes to meet new friends in the community and thus immediately joined Evergreen Newcomers; so get to know this energetic and interesting addition to our group!

THANK YOU

The Hospitality Committee would like to thank the new members who attended the Coffee and Dessert night last month.   It was a fun and lovely evening and we hope you're all now getting involved with some of the activities.  Also, thank you to the board members who came to meet and greet the new members.  We'll be holding another coffee in the Spring so please look for more information in the newsletter.

SPOTLIGHT ON ACTIVITY LEADER: BILL SCHENK (BOWLING)
Note: This is the first in a series of articles which will highlight the great men and women who have stepped up to lead one (or more) of the Newcomers Activity Groups. Without them, there would be no Evergreen Newcomers!

If you have not yet experienced a night of bowling with the Newcomers Bowling Group, you are missing out on a lot of fun and laughs. Bill Schenk is a Co-Leader of the Newcomers Bowling Group that meets the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 pm.  As the Activity Co-Leader, he helps to ensure that the members of the Bowling Group are reminded via email of the monthly gathering and is the point of contact at the bowling alley.

Bill is originally from Illinois, but worked in Silicon Valley for 20 years before retiring at age 40. He and his wife, Karen, and their two children have lived in Evergreen for five years, and he has been the Co-Leader of the Bowling Group for four years. In addition to the Bowling Group, Bill also participates in the Serendipity Newcomers Group.

When asked to relate an anecdote from his time as Co-Leader of the Bowling Group, Bill reflected back on one particularly memorable evening at the Lucky Strikes Lanes in Belmar where all of the bowling games were halted for a period of time in order to allow a fashion show to be conducted across the lanes!

If you are interested in joining Bill and the other Newcomer Bowlers for a fun evening out, please contact Bill at (303) 674-6367 or at bschenk@mail.com. You by no means need to be an experienced bowler in order to have a great time!

 ARE YOU COVERED?

ANNUAL INSURANCE REMINDER

Last year’s Board met with the insurance agent who underwrites the policy that covers our organization.  As a result of that discussion, each year we remind our club members of the portion of our coverage that involves our membership.  Many of our activities are held in homes and many activities are risk-free.  There are some functions that could pose liability issues; therefore we felt it important that members be fully informed as to the coverage our policy provides.  While we are making no recommendations as to what kind of riders are necessary, those of you who regularly host groups in your homes may want to revisit your individual policies to make sure you have the coverage you are most comfortable with.

For questions or input about this subject, please contact

Dick Sperry, Membership:  303-670-0415 / rsperry@iesco.com

NEWCOMERS’ COMMUNITY OUTREACH

This year we would like to see Evergreen Newcomers Club make a difference in our own community through volunteerism.  To this end, your board is requesting that each Activities and Interest Group perform one volunteer activity or service project together to benefit the local community. This group activity can be a great opportunity to meet others while giving members a chance to contribute to those less fortunate in the Evergreen/Conifer/Jefferson and Clear Creek Counties area.

We ask that each group notify us of their planned activity (date, time, type, number of participants) in advance. A list of suggested activities is given here merely as a guideline to help generate ideas for service projects.

Activity Ideas:

  • **Easy - collect canned goods and contribute to the Hwy 285 2nd Annual Jeffco Food Bank on November 10th at the Conifer King Soopers

  • Newcomers Chili Booth(s) at Firefighters benefit

  • Collect, split, deliver firewood to Senior Resource Center

  • Collect canned goods at gourmet dinner and donate to local organization

  • Habitat for Humanity house project helpers

  • Yard, plant or bake sale - donate proceeds to local needy organizations

  • Donate blood
  • Donate to charitable raffles: Senior Resource Center, Kiwanis, Chamber, Elks, M.O.P.S., etc.  Gourmet meal, crafts, wine or basket)

·     Maintenance cleanup - adopt a trail, road, or stream

·     Guest bartenders at local restaurants as a fundraiser for an identified cause

·     Adopt a family for the holiday season

·     Collect toys for toy drives: Toys 4 Tots, Ronald McDonald House, Children's Hospital, etc.

·     Collect closet cleanings and donate

·     Serve at food bank or local women's "Back to Work"

·     Collect books and donate to library

Other suggestions?  Call Mary Ellen Nelson, Community Outreach Leader, at (303) 679-1407.  Help Evergreen Newcomers Club make a difference in our community.

ACTIVITY GROUPS

 Alpine Skiing

Fred Simon / (303) 670-3120 / cfsimon2002@hotmail.com

As detailed in the previous newsletter, I will compile a list of all those who signed up or expressed an interest in mid-November and will email the list to all who registered. The group will have its first outing on the Wednesday after Thanks-giving (depending on snow conditions). The plan is to meet every Wed-nesday morning at 8:15 at Bergen RTD and carpool to the respective ski areas. It would be helpful if everyone who expects to attend on Wednesday would email the group the preceding Tuesday Think snow.

Our October discussion of The Looming Tower; Al Qaeda and the Road to 911 was spirited and broad-ranging...a fascinating book. Great job leading the discussion by Elaine Hardy. Thanks to Carol Weldon, our gracious hostess and to Elaine Hardy (double duty) and Betty Carcano for food.

Next month we revisit On the Road by Jack Kerouac at Julie Schmidt's house. Directions to follow or carpool from the library at 9:15.
