President’s Message

Transitions are a constant in life.  Some are easier than others--some are welcome--some force us to re-examine our priorities and life choices.  Changes are opportunities for new people to posit new ideas and new ways of looking at existing institutions.

This edition of the newsletter is the last for this season and my last time to communicate with all of you via the newsletter.  It has been my pleasure to serve as your president for the past two years and, in the process, have come to appreciate the significance of this organization and the dedication of so many of its members in the larger Evergreen community.  Board meetings were a time for promoting the mission of the organization by looking for ways to improve how we serve our constituency and investigating concerns that problems existed that needed to be addressed.  And it was a time to enjoy the camaraderie of a dedicated group of people who shared a common commitment to serve their community.  I’ve made new friends in the process and will treasure this experience as I look forward to handing over the duties to someone new.

It is also the last edition to be published by Diane Purdy who will be relinquishing her duties as editor to pursue other interests.  I want to take this opportunity to specifically thank Diane for her work on behalf of Newcomers for the past 4 years.  Each edition contained her special artistic touches.  I always appreciated her attention to these details that made the product interesting and appealing.

In the next weeks the board will be meeting to wrap up this year and prepare the new board members for their term of office.  We hope to make their transition as seamless as possible.  And then we have the Newcomer grand finale at The Fort.  I look forward to meeting many of you at this special year end event.

The ski season has drawn to a close.  There were some faithful skiers who showed up most Wednesdays, but we could use more next season.  March was the end of the official Newcomer’s schedule, and we look forward to greater participation next year.

Our March meeting was at the home of Liz Jones with Darla Schwartz and Bette Carcano providing treats.  Helen Marcus led our discussion of River Town and shared information on the author and the ever-changing country of China.  Our April book is Tender Bar by J.R. Moehringer and Sharon Ellinger will lead our discussion.  We will meet at Sonny Harris’ and directions to her home will be e-mailed the week before the meeting.

Newcomer’s newest book group, which reads non-fiction, will meet this month.  Date, time, and book selection to be announced.  If you are interested, please contact Bette Carcano at (303) 670-1527 or Gwen Haile at (303) 679-3262.  This is a “co-ed” group, so men as well as women are welcome!

Louann Young / (303) 670-4617 / louann@evcohs.com

To join a book group or start a new one, contact Bette Carcano at (303) 670-1527 or bcarcano@earthlink.net

Our next meeting will be Monday, April 16th at 9:30 a.m. at the firehouse on Bergen Parkway.  Our original book for April, Suite Francaise, is not available in paperback yet.  We’ll choose a different book at our next meeting.  Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirousky and Sandra Smith will be our book for May.  We need a new leader for next season, so give some thought to taking over the position.  Also give thought to whether we want to continue meeting through the summer.

Richard Purdy / (303) 670-9566 /rpurdyinc@msn.com

Bill Schenk / (303) 674-6367 / bschenk@mail.com

Once again we had a great time bowling last month!  Richard Purdy and Bill Schenk tied and Diane Purdy finally broke a hundred again both games!  Our next bowling night is on Thursday, April 5th at 6:30 p.m. at Jillian’s.  Please join us and have some fun!  We plan to bowl during the summer months, so we hope to see you!

Linda Rebeck / (303) 670-8748 / lindajrebeck2@msn.com

Renee Gioeli / (303) 674-8046 / rgioeli@aol.com

We had 28 bridge players at our last bridge.  It was so nice to welcome our new players who have graduated from their lessons.  We had a wonderful and fun group in all.  We are looking forward to our next bridge date at Mount Vernon Country Club.  The sky is the limit on players, so come and join us for a fun-filled day of play and lunch.  Contact Dean Porter at (303) 679-3087 for additional information and reservations.

  4x4

Bob Ogden / (303) 670-9014 / ogdenrv@speedtrail.net

Colette Lambert / (303) 670-6835 / cowill@wispertel.net

With most snow behind us, the months ahead are prime time!  In addition to monthly or bi-monthly local outings, the next of which is Devil’s Canyon near Idaho Springs on April 21st, we have four out-of-town trips scheduled:  Grand Junction in May, Ft. Collins in June, Ouray in August, and Moab in November.  We offer plenty of challenging trails for experienced members and extra-capable vehicles, as well as opportunities for the less experienced and stock SUVs.

 Bunco

Karen Schenk / (303) 674-6367 / karenschenk@gmail.com

Bunco is a dice game which meets the fourth Wednesday of each month in the homes of members.  We always welcome new players!  Please contact Karen Schenk for more information.

  Hiking

Donna Hull / (303) 679-6697 / donnachull@yahoo.com

Suzanne Schlinsog / (303) 674-0734 / suzschlin@comcast.net

Join us each Friday throughout the spring and summer months on various moderate four-plus mile hikes.  Destinations and specifics are announced weekly via e-mail.  April is typically a month where you can expect to find many different trail conditions, so be prepared with snowshoes and Yak Tracks.  And later when the snow finally retreats, you won’t want to miss the subsequent wildflower season.  Hope to see you soon.
