President’s Message

I wake up early.  So I’ve begun to use the time before the sun’s rays brighten the horizon and the furnace warms the house to wonder about my dreams, take inventory, plan my day.  This morning my musings centered on the idea “pay attention.”  I thought about safety nets, connections.  I marveled that two days ago my daughter sent me a link to a CNN.com cover story of child soldiers, quoting her cousin who works with a UN agency to try to stop this practice.  Yesterday I saw an interview with a young man who escaped that horror and is turning his life around.  Pay attention--safety nets--connections--“isn’t it awful” can morph into “isn’t it amazing.”

While we may think that what we do is insignificant in the grand scheme of things, we all have our spheres of influence.  It is a worthwhile exercise to pay attention to what is going on around us and grab opportunities that may change the course of another person’s life.  Evergreen Newcomers is in the business of promoting and providing connections with people who are new to the community.  Those connections may provide a safety net for people who are feeling alone and disconnected.  Pay attention.

So enough mulling.  It’s time to get up--but first I have to dislodge the cat from his cozy place beside me and make sure when I get out of bed I don’t step on the dog lying beside me.  Pay attention!

Bill Schenk / (303) 674-6367 / bschenk@mail.com

Due to bad weather conditions, we cancelled our bowling night last month.  This winter has been a real doozy and has caused many people to cancel events.  Let’s hope March’s weather will be better!  Our next bowling night is on Thursday, March 1st at 6:30 p.m. at Jillian’s in the Colorado Mills Mall.  Please join us for a night of bowling, socializing, eating, and drinking!  All levels welcome!

The winter months are always a challenge and the best laid plans sometimes never get accomplished due to the snow pack.  With March being the snowiest month of the year, our plan is to ride Chinn’s Lake and Fall River Reservoir on the 24th, unless mother nature throws us another curve ball.  As usual, details will follow by e-mail.  See you on the trails!

  Hiking

Donna Hull / (303) 679-6697 / donnachull@yahoo.com

Suzanne Schlinsog / (303) 674-0734 / suzschlin@comcast.net

Our group generally plans 3+ mile winter hikes using yak tracks or snowshoes.  The severe winter weather conditions this year have made planning difficult.  Consequently, we generally announce hikes via e-mail on Wednesdays or Thursdays.  We will be avoiding many of our proposed higher elevation hikes due to increased avalanche potential.  So join us on those rare mild, sunny Fridays when cabin fever has seized you and only a fairly local fresh air excursion will cure you.

Casual Gourmet
