President’s Message

As I pulled into the parking lot of the Golden library this morning I noted that part of the lot was blocked off.  At first glance I thought the workmen suspended on the lift were trimming trees.  Taking a closer look, I discovered they were indeed trimming trees, but in the holiday sense--they were stringing lights in preparation for Golden’s spectacular light display celebrating the Christmas season.  While we are immersed in our day-to-day chores, we are also having to look ahead and prepare for what is next, whether we are ready or not.  So as I write this still wondering where I’m going to buy my Thanksgiving turkey, I’m also aware that the next holiday is looming and preparations need to be made.

The Newcomer Board is also juggling time spent making sure the routine matters are taken care of while debating how we deal with growth issues that involve change and being flexible.  We appreciate hearing from members about your experiences as this informs us as to whether there are issues that need to be addressed.  We are continually working on finding ways to accommodate the many requests we have to provide opportunities for all our members.  So as we enter the month of December, we will be a part of many celebrations--Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa.  Whatever our particular orientation, a common denominator sees to be illumination.  The Advent wreath, the Menorah and the Kinara all use candles with colors having special significance.  As we move into the holiday season, may each of us have a renewed sense of appreciation for the lights in our lives and endeavor to share these with others.

Peace and Joy,

Thanks to Diane Graboski for hosting November’s game.  We all had a great time and good weather too!  December’s game will be held on Wednesday, December 20th at the home of Diane Purdy (one week early due to the holidays).  We combine this game with our holiday party/gift exchange.  Let’s all dress in our holiday finest--cocktail attire!--and celebrate together!  Space will be limited to 20, so let’s make this our best ever!  Send R.S.V.P.s to Karen Schenk at karenschenk@gmail.com.

  4x4

Bob Ogden / (303) 670-9014 / ogdenrv@speedtrail.net

Colette Lambert / (303) 670-6835 / cowill@wispertel.net

We wrapped up 2006 with a snowy, November outing to Loch Lomond.  Planning is now underway for 2007; the schedule will issue in December.  It’ll be packed with exciting local Saturday trips and some out-of-town overnighters.  We’ll shift focus more toward “moderate” and “difficult” trails in recognition of the growing experience levels and equipment capabilities of our active members.  Although a more advanced group, there will still be opportunities for adventurous beginners and stock SUVs!

 International

Joyce Rasbach / (303) 670-9443 / jhrasbach@aol.com

Audrey Boyan / (303) 674-4872 / aboyan@comcast.net

There will be no meeting in December.  The next meeting will be Thursday, January 26th.  This will be another evening meeting held at the United Methodist Church on Hwy. 74 across from Safeway.  The speaker will be Clark Jackson, a Newcomer, who summited Everest last spring.  He will tell us about his adventure.  Details in the January newsletter.  Reservations can be made starting January 2nd with Joyce at (303) 670-9443 or Audrey at (303) 674-4872).

  Krafty Newcomers

Audrey Boyan / (303) 674-4872 / aboyan@comcast.net

Betty Nicklow / (303) 670-4407 / skiwithnick@comcast.net

In November, we created a variety of items.  Some members were busy sewing holiday stockings while others were making ornaments and one made a table runner.  Normally we make one craft a meeting and complete it that day.  There is always time for talking and nibbling.  In December, there will be no crafting, just partying!  We welcome new members.  If you’re interested in joining, please contact Audrey by e-mail or Betty.

 Potluck

Darla Schwartz / (303) 670-5552 / bendarla@hotmail.com

A special thanks to the Hollenbecks for hosting November’s potluck.  On December 9th, two couples have been kind enough to offer to host.  They are the Davises in the south side of town and the Faloons in the north.  If you would like to attend, contact Darla for home and menu assignments and directions.  We extend a special invitation to those who are new and those who have not previously attended potluck.

  Moms and Tots

Leslie Simms  / (303) 670-6324 /lesrab@hotmail.com

The Moms and Tots group continues to meet on a weekly basis.  We have a wonderful group of children with a range of ages from 7 months to 3 years old.  We also had another fun Mom’s night out at SoHo in Evergreen where we were entertained with jazz music and cocktails.  Please call Leslie Simms for more information.

Scrapbooking

Pam Solomon / (303) 670-0426 / avalonpam@yahoo.com

Kellee Vertin / (303) 679-1670 / scrapperaholic@evcohs.com

We will be meeting at the Scrapbook Depot from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13th.  Please R.S.V.P. to Pam or Kellee.  Also, we will be doing an exchange of any supplies you will not be using.  Bring your paper, stickers, etc. to share with the other members on the 13th.  Any leftovers will be donated to a local charity.
