President’s Message

DEADLINES, DEADLINES, DEADLINES!!!  Whether we are employed, retired, have divested ourselves of numerous responsibilities; we are constantly invited to respond to the latest and greatest by a set date and time--the tyranny of the urgent, as we refer to it in our consulting business.

Once a year, I try to schedule a vacation where we can go to a favorite destination, shut off the cell phone, take off our wrist watches and enjoy a couple of days where we get up when we wake up, eat when we are hungry, sleep when we are tired.  It isn’t that easy but once you get the hang of it, is a cool way to spend a couple of days.

Deadlines, however, are a necessary part of our lives.  I’m writing this to encourage you to take advantage of one that the board has set--send in your renewal for membership in Evergreen Newcomers by October 15th.  We are committed to having the directory printed earlier this year and want to have it as complete as possible.  Our membership numbers are on target with the numbers this time last year.  But we still have 149 members who haven’t sent in their renewals for the year.  If you are in that category, we invite you to meet the deadline so you will continue to receive the newsletter and when the directories are distributed you will find your name listed.  We look forward to hearing from you.  Thanks.

We met at the home of Ingrid Davis last month.  Thanks to Julie and Dee who provided the hospitality and yummy food!  Lyn Barrie led a workshop on “book club expectations.”  Thanks for getting us off to a great start.  Our October meeting will be held at Pat Cappelli’s home and we’ll discuss Snowflower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See.  We’ll pick the books for the remainder of the season, so please review the book list and be prepared to vote for your choices.  Happy reading!

Richard Purdy / (303) 670-9566 /richardpurdy@mindspring.com

Bill Schenk / (303) 674-6367 / bschenk@mail.com

Bowling last month was a blast!  Both Dennis and Marilyn Smith were “on a roll” and bowled some fine scores!  Good job, you two!  For those who haven’t joined us yet, we’re a mixed bag of bowlers, from beginning to advance.  We don’t compete and our sole purpose is to have fun!  So join us for our next bowling night on Thursday, October 5th at 6:30 p.m.  Location to be announced shortly via e-mail.  See ya at the alley!

 Book Group II

To join a book group, contact Bette Carcano at (303) 670-1527 or bcarcano@earthlink.net

Welcome new members!  We had our first meeting at Camp Grounds Coffee Shop, but will find a new location for future meetings.  Pay close attention to your e-mails so you’ll know where to go for our October gathering.  Our book for October is The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, and Nancy Oakley will lead our discussion.  Our book for November is Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, if you’d like to read ahead.  This group is full, so there are no spaces for new members.

Our group has enjoyed an adventurous year, with many Saturday outings on nearby trails, and overnight trips to Moab, Alamosa, Buena Vista, and Crested Butte.  Three more Saturday outings remain, two in October and one in November, and then we take December off before resuming in January.  The next adventure, scheduled for October 14th, will be on the very scenic Kingston Peak trail, which loops above Alice and St. Mary’s Glacier.  Happy trails!
